First, let's clear up a common misconception. Monster damage conversion and damage taken as are multiplicative, not additive. This is because they operate at two separate stages of the hit damage calculation.

Monster damage conversion acts as an offensive modifier for the monster, determining how much of their damage is converted before it hits the player.

Damage taken as acts as a defensive modifier for your character, shifting the damage after it has already been calculated and passed through avoidance layers like evasion or dodge.

Examples of Monster Damage Conversion:

Elementalist's Shaper of Flames (converts physical damage to fire on ignited enemies).

Count's Binding (often seen on mercenaries this league).

Pyroshock Clasp and other similar unique effects.

Examples of Damage Taken As:

Lightning Coil (50% of physical hit damage taken as lightning).

Dawnbreaker (shifts physical damage to fire).

Because the two systems work in different stages, their effects don't stack directly.

Lightning Coil converts 50% of that remaining 600 to lightning, resulting in:

This example shows how the two systems reduce each other's overall impact, often making it more efficient to focus on one mechanic exclusively rather than mixing both.

Reaching 100% Physical Hit Damage Taken As

For most builds, hitting 100% conversion is not required, but it's an incredibly strong defensive layer when combined with mechanics like Transcendence (armor applying to elemental damage) or mitigation stacking. After patch 3.25, reaching this milestone was thought impossible in temporary leagues-until the new unique Bound by Destiny was introduced.

The Core Gear Setup

To achieve full conversion, you'll need the following items:

1. Lightning Coil (50%)

The backbone of the setup. Lightning Coil shifts 50% of physical hit damage as lightning damage. While it comes with a penalty to maximum lightning resistance, the defensive trade-off is well worth it when you're reducing the amount of physical damage you take to near zero.

2. Conqueror-Influenced Helmet (13%)

Using a Conqueror-influenced helmet allows you to gain another 10–13% physical damage taken as an element.

Redeemer Influence = Cold.

Warlord Influence = Fire.

Crusader Influence = Lightning.

To push for 100%, you'll need a max-rolled elevated mod (13%). Combined with Lightning Coil, this brings you to 63% conversion.

3. Bound by Destiny Jewel (10%)

This new unique jewel, introduced in 3.26, can roll modifiers like:

"Physical damage taken as Cold" (Redeemer)

"Physical damage taken as Fire" (Warlord)

"Physical damage taken as Lightning" (Crusader)

The jewel is limited to one per character and requires four influenced items of the same type to activate its bonus. For simplicity, match your helmet's influence type so it counts toward the four. A perfect roll of 10% takes your total to 73% conversion.

4. Dark Scorn (27%)

The last-and most build-limiting-piece of the puzzle is Dark Scorn, a unique bow. It has:

"25% of physical damage from hits taken as chaos damage."

With a Tempering Orb enchantment that increases modifier magnitude by at least 8%, this can scale up to 27%, which pushes the total to a perfect 100% physical damage taken as other damage types.Why Dark Scorn?

Dark Scorn is a niche weapon, and integrating it into your build will limit offensive options unless you're already planning a bow-based setup. However, defensively, this weapon is unmatched for full conversion due to its high chaos shift.

Do note that Dark Scorn prevents you from using an offensive powerhouse like a crafted rare bow or a high DPS unique. It's a heavy trade-off between defense and damage.

Challenges of the Setup

While this gear combination achieves 100% conversion, there are several caveats:

No Eldritch Implicits-Both Lightning Coil and the Conqueror helmet lock you out of the powerful Eldritch crafting system.

Build Restriction-You must build around Dark Scorn, which limits skill options and requires chaos-scaling or bow-compatible setups.

Minus Max Resistance-Lightning Coil reduces max lightning resistance, meaning elemental DoTs like Burning Ground or Shocked Ground become more dangerous.

Jewel Requirement-Bound by Destiny requires four influenced items, further constraining gear slots.

Despite these limitations, the defensive payoff can be significant, especially in combination with mechanics like Transcendence or armor-stacking for elemental hits.

Influenced Unique Items

An important detail for Bound by Destiny is that influenced unique items count toward the four-item requirement if they can be "chanced" from a base item. For example:

Lightning Coil can be crafted as an influenced item.

Dark Scorn can also be influenced.

By carefully selecting your influenced slots (helmet, chest, boots, gloves, or weapon), you can activate the jewel without sacrificing too many other gear choices.

The Alternative: Wine of the Profit

Technically, Wine of the Profit, a new unique flask, can also push you toward 100% conversion. It has the potential to roll two physical damage taken as modifiers at once.

However, this approach is completely unreliable due to the random divination buffs it draws on each use. As a result, it's not a realistic option for builds that require consistent defenses. It's more of a curiosity than a core strategy.

When Should You Consider 100% Conversion?

Full conversion is not for everyone. For most builds, stacking armor or block is more practical. However, 100% physical shift shines in:

Transcendence Builds-Armor now mitigates all hit damage when combined with full conversion.

Hybrid Defenses-Pairing 100% conversion with spell suppression and elemental flasks creates a near-impenetrable defense.

Hardcore or SSF-When survivability trumps all else, this setup can help mitigate the most lethal physical hits.

Final Thoughts

The return of 100% physical damage taken as other types in patch 3.26 offers a fascinating (and very niche) defensive path. By combining:

Lightning Coil (50%)

Elevated Conqueror Helmet (13%)
